International Summer School on Sustainable Development
Im Rahmen seiner Arbeit zum Themenbereich "EU Energie- und Klimapolitik" organisiert das Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Europäischen Akademie Otzenhausen (EAO) und der Universität Trier die jährlich stattfindende "International Summer School on Sustainable Development". Die jeweils einwöchige Summer School beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen Themen der europäischen und internationalen Energie- und Klimapolitik. Veranstaltungsort ist die Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen, die für ihre ausgezeichneten Unterbringungskapazitäten sowie für ihre exzellente Arbeitsatmosphäre bekannt ist.
Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an fortgeschrittene Studenten, Doktoranden, Nachwuchswissenschaftler und "young professionals" aus aller Welt. Die Teilnehmer erhalten die Gelegenheit, sich mit namhaften Experten aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Verbänden auszutauschen, eigene Projekte vorzustellen und ihre Forschungsarbeit zu vertiefen. Das Programm beinhaltet ausreichend Freiraum zur Diskussion unter den Teilnehmern sowie zur Präsentation eigener Forschungsvorhaben. Neben Vorträgen und Präsentationen bietet die Summer School einen breiten Rahmen zur Freizeitgestaltung sowie verschiedene Exkursionen in der Region. Seminarsprache ist Englisch.
Summer School 2010: A Sustainable Energy Policy for Europe - Political, Social and Economic Implications
The fight against global warming, the creation of an integrated energy market and the interest in securing energy supply have been the paradigms of European energy policy for some years. A sustainable energy policy should deliver answers on all of these aspects, while, at the same time, being sustainable with a view on future generations. In recent years, some topics have turned out to be crucial for a sustainable energy concept: Energy efficiency, the deployment of renewable energies and the support of energy technology and research. Improving performance on all these aspects could finally lead to the decarbonisation of the power sector and a better use of finite resources. Nevertheless, the preconditions for such a energy revolution are enormous. It requires massive grid extensions, the use of information and communication technologies in energy supply and public incentives for research in new technologies, just to name a few.
The 3rd International Summer School on Sustainable Development will discuss these questions in detail. In a first step, the requirements for such a new energy policy will be analysed. Which reforms are needed, in order to reach a sustainable energy policy? In a second step, participants will go deeper into detail, look at the different aspects of a new energy concept and analyse the implications of such a policy reform on different levels. It will be supported by field trips in order to understand the local implications of major policy changes on the European level. During the whole Summer School, participants will be asked to contribute to the debate and invited to develop a common understanding of what measures are possible, required and promising, in order to make Europe ready for a new energy policy.
The Summer School comprises lectures given by well-known academics, politicians, representatives of industry and NGOs. The program leaves enough time to discuss each lecture in detail and also includes excursions throughout the region. Participants conducting research in this field are welcome to present their projects during the Summer School. The best project will receive the "European Sustainability Award" sponsored by the EUROPEAN ACADEMY OTZENHAUSEN.
The 3rd International Summer School on Sustainable Development is organized by the EUROPEAN ACADEMY OTZENHAUSEN gGmbH, the INSTITUT FUER EUROPAEISCHE POLITIK (IEP), Berlin, and the UNIVERSITY OF TRIER. After a successful start in 2008, this year´s International Summer School will be the third event in a 3-years-cycle covering different aspects of sustainable energy policy for Europe. It will take place at the renowned EUROPEAN ACADERMY OTZENHAUSEN (www.eao-otzenhausen.de), a place known for its excellent working and housing conditions.
Participants should be graduate students, PhD students, young researchers in Political Science, European Studies and Economics as well as young professionals.

Summer School on Sustainable Development 2009: Decarbonizing Europe and the World. European Climate Policy - Internal and External Dimensions
Hurricane Katrina in the United States, bush fires in Australia, floods in South Asia. Natural disasters all around the world demonstrate in an alarming way, how a warming planet could look like within a comparatively short period of time. Meanwhile, the economic and financial crisis confronts the world with its much more direct impacts to everyday life and tells international climate policy to step back on the agenda for a moment. Despite the current economic problems, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the adaptation to a changing environment remain more urgent than ever before in order to prevent serious environmental, social and economic damages. The Kyoto Protocol is due to expire in 2012 and until today, the contracting states are far away from signing a follow-up agreement to combat climate change. Therefore much aspiration is put on the forthcoming Post-Kyoto Conference in Copenhagen. After deciding on a legally binding climate policy in December 2008, the European Union is assumed to lead the Conference to a success and thus to complete the tenacious climate negotiations. Nevertheless, several crucial questions remain open until today: Will Europe´s efforts be sufficient to bring other countries to agree on a post-Kyoto treaty? What are the conditions for developing countries to accept emission reductions? Which factors influence the EU´s ability to fulfill such a leadership function in the ongoing fight against global warming?
The 2nd International Summer School on Sustainable Development will discuss these questions by illuminating the internal and external dimensions of European climate policy. First of all, the academy addresses the social, political and economic aspects determining European action in the field of climate policy. In a second step, it concentrates on the international framework of climate policy, thereby analyzing the role of the major global actors in the post-Kyoto process and the ensuing challenges for the European Union.

1st Summer School on Sustainable Development 2008: European Energy Policy and Climate Change. Political and Economic Aspects
Energiepolitik und Klimaschutz als zwei Seiten einer Medaille " 20 Teilnehmer aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern, den USA und Kanada haben sich im Rahmen der ersten europäischen Nachhaltigkeitsakademie eine Woche lang mit unterschiedlichen Aspekten und Herausforderungen einer europäischen Energie- und Klimapolitik befasst.
Die in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Europäische Politik, Berlin und der Universität Trier durchgeführte Veranstaltung bildet den Auftakt einer mehrjährigen Seminarreihe zu verschiedenen Themen einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung im Focus des europäischen Integrationsprozesses. Die Teilnehmer konnten mit Experten aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Forschung Themen wie z.B. Energiesicherheit, die Rolle der EU im internationalen Klimaschutz, erneuerbare Energien etc. analysieren und diskutieren. Von Seiten der Politik stellte z.B. der saarländische Umweltminister Stefan Mörsdorf das Klimaschutzkonzept seines Bundeslandes vor, während der Europaabgeordnete Jo Leinen über den aktuellen Stand der Klima- und Energiedebatte aus europäischer Sicht informierte.
Darüber hinaus hatten die Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, eigene Projekte zur Energie- und Klimathematik im Seminar vorzustellen und zu diskutieren. Mit der Verleihung des von den Veranstaltern eigens geschaffenen "European Sustainability Award" an Andrzej Ancygier für seinen Vortrag zur Windenergie in Polen wurde ein hervorragender Teilnehmerbeitrag ausgezeichnet. Ergänzt wurde das Programm durch Besuche der Morbacher Energielandschaft, des Keltischen Ringwalls und der Stadt Trier sowie gemeinsame Freizeitaktivitäten. Insgesamt machten anspruchsvolle Vorträge zu unterschiedlichen Themenaspekten, intensive fachliche Diskussionen und eine gute Seminaratmosphäre das Konzept aus Sicht von Teilnehmern und Veranstaltern zu einem voller Erfolg.
